Freshman Seminar: Learning for the
New Century
First Computer Workshop
September 20, 2002
Items to cover:
Temple Mailbox: What is your e-mail address in the Temple University system? Please e-mail this to both Dr. Tompkins and Dan Bove by clicking here.
Blackboard
Since you’ve been using Blackboard in your Psychology 60 class, you have a general sense of how the software works. So this workshop will focus on three Blackboard tools:
Discussion Board
Go to the Discussion Board section of Blackboard (in Course Tools) and respond to the question under "Blackboard Workshop." While you're there, note that the assignment for Sunday, September 22 has also been posted.
Digital Drop Box
To use this software, you need to have something to send from Microsoft Word. So, working with the person beside you, go to Word and write a quick 25-word comment on Fast Food Nation. Save this anywhere on the hard drive with a distinctive name and add the suffix ".doc": e.g. Millertime.doc.
Now, go to the Tools section of Blackboard and click on Digital Drop Box. This is one of the more confusing Blackboard areas. Click on "Add File," and provide a file name. Now, under File, use the Browse command to get the name of the file from your hard drive. Add this, provide a comment if you wish, and submit the file.
This is easier. Go to the Communications section of Blackboard and click on E-Mail. Send a short greeting message to a classmate, with a copy to Dan Tompkins and Dan Bove.
Using the Web for educational purposes
Use the Temple University website. Here are three tasks: do them with the person sitting beside you. Please send your responses to Dan Bove and Dr. Tompkins by clicking here. Be sure to give your names.
Go to:
At the bottom of the page, click on Directories. Locate Dr. Tompkins in the "Search the Temple University Cherry and White Pages," and send the e-mail address given there to Dan Bove and Dr. Tompkins.
Now go to the Math and Science Resource Center website:
At what hours is tutoring offered at this Center? Report back to Dan and Dan.
Now go back to Directories and use the Site Index to find the Writing Center. Find the Resources section, and locate the item, Writing an Effective Thesis Statement. Send us the URL for this statement.
These are tools you'll be expected to use in a number of Temple courses. We'll practice with them in our Freshman Seminar.
